What to Expect After Cheek Filler

What to Expect After Cheek Filler

20th April 2022

Cheek fillers are one of the most common areas treated at Aloki Skin when it comes to injectables. So, what can you expect after having cheek filler? Dr Rowena breaks down the details for us.

Cheek filler is a treatment where dermal filler (gel-like substances made of cross-linked sugar molecules) are injected under the skin to add volume and structure to the face. They’re often used to create a more youthful look. As we age, we lose volume in our face due to lower collagen production, bone resorption & fat pad loss, and cheek filler is a way to combat that volume loss.

What to Expect Before and After Cheek Filler

The midface is a very important area of the face for fresh and youthful appearance. The cheeks are one of the first areas to show the loss of volume associated with ageing. Filling the cheek area with dermal filler is an effective treatment for a fresher, younger or more refined look.

As we age, our cheeks lose volume, and the bone and soft tissue diminish, leaving us with reduced structural support in that area, creating loss of volume, folds and wrinkles.

Dermal filler can improve:

  • Size of cheeks, by restoring natural curves lost with age and highlighting cheekbones.
  • The skin of cheeks – the wrinkling on cheek skin, especially from smiling, can be improved with dermal filler.
  • The symmetry of cheeks – asymmetry of cheeks is very common and can be improved with dermal filler.

Before Your Treatment

Prior to undergoing any treatments in clinic, we always begin with a thorough, complimentary and obligation-free consultation with one of our experienced practitioners. During a consultation, patient goals, medical history, risks, common side effects and aftercare instructions will be discussed. Your practitioner will also determine if it is the correct treatment option and if it is medically safe. It will then be determined how much dermal filler will be required to achieve your desired goal, and a quote can then be provided after your practitioner has assessed your face.

There are some precautionary measures that need to be taken prior to having cheek fillers. Things that need to be avoided prior to treatment include aspirin, Nurofen, alcohol and fish oil. You need to be healthy on the day of treatment, which means no active infections anywhere as your immune system may put a barrier around the filler. This can then cause a granuloma or lump, which may need to be cut out.

During Cheek Filler Appointments

On the day of your appointment, prior to commencing treatment, your practitioner will revisit your treatment goals and quote to ensure nothing has changed in between visits. Your practitioner will then go through a consent form with you and get you to sign it, and before photos will be taken for our reference. Your face will be cleansed with alcohol to prepare the treatment area. Your injector will either use a very fine needle or a cannula to inject filler into the cheeks. You can feel the filler going in under the skin, which is a very strange sensation. The treatment itself involves very minimal discomfort, and a topical anaesthetic can be used if necessary. There is also local anaesthetic in the dermal filler itself. Your injector will talk you through the whole process, and it should take approximately 30 minutes.

Cheek Filler Immediately After

Immediately post-treatment, there may be some redness, swelling and bruising. Results from cheek filler are immediate, but due to swelling, the cheeks may look sharp or full. This will reduce over the following days, and results will be assessed at a two-week follow-up appointment. Due to swelling, your cheeks may look asymmetrical and should resolve automatically as the swelling resolves. The area treated can be quite tender whilst swelling and bruising is present.

Aftercare advice for cheek filler treatments includes:

  • Avoid make-up and exercise for the rest of the day
  • No spas or saunas for 1 week
  • Be gentle with the areas injected and use clean hands when cleansing the face to reduce the risk of infection
  • No facials for two weeks post-treatment

When Do Cheek Fillers Settle?

Swelling and bruising is expected after cheek filler, which should reduce within one week. More severe swelling and bruising can take up to 2 weeks to fully resolve.
